Linfield College was established in 1858 in McMinnville, Oregon, the outgrowth of several earlier attempts to establish a Christian college in Oregon Territory. It was first known as The Baptist College at McMinnville, later as McMinnville College. The name was formally changed to Linfield College in 1922 in memory of a Baptist minister whose widow, Frances Ross Linfield, gave a substantial gift to the college.
